The Supreme Court permited a restricted version of President Trump’s travel ban to come into effect this week, and the President made several statements about the ruling. The order will take effect within 72 hours. He said on Twitter:
And then made a statement:
“Today’s unanimous Supreme Court decision is a clear victory for our national security.”
“Today’s ruling allows me to use an important tool for protecting our nation’s homeland. I am also particularly gratified that the Supreme Court’s decision was 9-0.”
Awesome news for President Trump and awesome news for America!
Here are the parameters of the travel ban:
- Affects travelers from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
- Travelers will be allowed in if they have a “credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.” This means visa and green card holders will still be allowed.
- All refugees from those countries will not be allowed in, as the Court said: “the balance tips in favor of the Government’s compelling need to provide for the Nation’s security.”
The Court likewise agreed to hear full arguments for the ban when the Court is back in session in October.
This is a huge victory for President Trump, and three of the judges, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and President Trump’s latest addition, Neil Gorsuch, wrote a separate opinion saying that they wanted the entire travel ban to be reinstated. This sounds like it will lead to another victory for President Trump in October!
